How does war reshape schools and schoolchildren? Drawing on archival research and interviews, this presentation aims to show that access to private schools, as well as control over their students, was one of the key stakes of the Lebanese civil war for the warring parties between 1975 and 1990. While students were thus made into "targets" of the conflict, they also demonstrated multiple forms of agency, revealing their capacities for adaptation and even resistance.

Sami Ouchane is a doctoral student in history at SciencesPo Aix and a lecturer at SciencesPo Paris.
