The Promise of Patriarchy: Women and the Nation of Islam

Ula Taylor will discuss how, despite being relegated to a lifestyle that did not encourage working outside of the home, Nation of Islam women found freedom in being able to bypass the degrading experiences connected to labor performed largely by working-class black women and in raising and educating their children in racially affirming environments.  Ula Taylor is a Professor of African-American and African Diaspora Studies at University of California, Berkeley. She is the author of The Promise of Patriarchy: Women and the Nation of Islam, as well as several other books and publications. In 2013, she received the Distinguished Professor Teaching Award for UC Berkeley.

Dinner will be served.  A complimentary copy of Professor Taylor's recent book, The Promise of Patriarchy: Women and the Nation of Islam will be provided to the first 10 people to RSVP and attend the event.
