Stanford Professor Priya Satia Consulted for Muslim Superhero 'Ms. Marvel' Series

Abbasi Program affiliate faculty and Stanford Professor of History, Priya Satia, acted as a consultant for the newly released 'Ms. Marvel' series; the first Marvel/Disney+ production to center a Muslim superhero. Directed by Bisha K. Ali and streaming on June 8th, it tells the story of a Jersey City 16-year-old Pakistani-American high school girl called Kamala Khan, who finds herself with unexpected super powers (played by actor Iman Vellani).

Professor Satia, who specializes in modern British and British empire history especially in South Asia and the Middle East, called the 'Ms. Marvel' "groundbreaking" for its portrayal of a Pakistani-American Muslim girl as a Marvel superhero, the character for which was created in 2013 by  Sana Amanat, Stephen Wacker, writer G. Willow Wilson, and artists Adrian Alphona and Jamie McKelvie.

Professor Satia dubbed the production a "huge milestone for South Asian and Muslim representation," and also attended the red carpet premiere.
