Erdem Ilter is a historian of the Ottoman Empire and the modern Middle East. He received his Ph.D. in History from the University of California, Los Angeles. His research focuses on demography, sovereignty, colonialism, state formation, borderlands, and minority politics in the late Ottoman Empire and its successor states. He is currently a Visiting Scholar at the Abbasi Program in Islamic Studies at Stanford University and a member of the Ottoman Demographic, Social, and Family History (ODSFH) Research Group at Binghamton University’s Center for Middle East and North Africa Studies.
