About the Abbasi Program

The Abbasi Program in Islamic Studies is the central forum for the study of Islam and Muslim societies at Stanford University. Working within and across academic disciplines and world regions, our faculty explore the religion of Islam in all its internal complexity and in diverse social and cultural contexts.  We promote  courses, administer students grants, and offer an undergraduate specialization as part of Global Studies minor. About the Undergraduate Liaison Position
This is a new position aimed at enhancing the Abbasi Program’s undergraduate activities and outreach efforts. The liaison will

  • work with the Associate Director in crafting academic and professional programming tailored to Stanford undergraduates’ interests and needs.
  • directly engage in topic selection, audience creation, and publicity for undergraduate-focused events, and will be responsible for organizing one event per quarter. 
  • be an active and enthusiastic participant in the Abbasi Program activities.
  • represent the Abbasi Program in conversations with relevant student groups on campus. 
  • gather and synthesize information from peers for program assessment and make recommendations for staff. 
  • will participate in undergraduate-specific events (such as Majors Night, Islamic Studies Open House, the Abbasi Program Receptions).
  • commit to work for a minimum of 3 quarters during the academic year and to train her/his/their successor. 

 

Qualifications
The ideal candidate should

  • be a current Stanford undergraduate student. Priority will be given to Global Studies minors specializing in Islamic Studies. Rising sophomores, sophomores, juniors, and seniors with an approved co-term plan are encouraged to apply.
  • demonstrate extensive knowledge/familiarity with the study of Islam & Muslim societies and cultures.
  • be interested in fostering an intellectual community across schools and student groups.
  • have good analytical skills to gather and combine information from different stake holders.
  • have excellent social skills to cultivate relationships between the Abbasi Program and existing student groups and communities.
  • be reliable, self-motivated, organized.

 

Hours & Compensation

The liaison must be able to work approximately 4 hours per week. Work space will be assigned in the Abbasi Program Office. Some work will be conducted outside the office and on campus. The hourly rate will be $14. Work Study options are available
