Welcoming Abbasi Affiliate Visiting Scholar, Professor Trinidad Rico

The Abbasi Program is honored to host Professor Trinidad Rico as a courtesy affiliate visiting scholar. Professor Rico is Associate Professor and Director of Cultural Heritage and Preservation Studies at Rutgers University. Her research examines tensions between practices of heritage preservation and religious traditions with a focus on the Muslim World and Qatar.

At Stanford, she is currently teaching a course entitled “Global Heritage, Religion, and Secularism.”

In synchronistic alignment with the Abbasi Program’s theme for this year, “Memory, Heritage and Cultural Production,” we are so pleased to host Professor Rico as a courtesy affiliate. Marking this, it is fitting to share Professor Rico’s timely reflection on Edward Said’s influence on heritage studies. It is worth noting that Said, who passed 18 years ago on September 24th, wrote Orientalism in the study next to the one Rico occupies today at The Center for Advanced Study in Behavioral Sciences at Stanford, where she is spending her sabbatical.
