Denise Gill is associate professor of ethnomusicology and of Islam & the Arts. Dr. Gill specializes in the sonic, musical, and listening practices in western Turkey and former Ottoman territories. She is the author of the prize-winning book Melancholic Modalities: Affect, Islam, and Turkish Classical Musicians (Oxford University Press, 2017). Dr. Gill’s current book projects focus on distinct listening structures attuned to the sounds of death, loss, and migratory thresholds.
